An evocative evening celebrating the rich musical traditions of Asia Minor, brought to life by Estudiantina of Melbourne and Saltana.
Estudiantina of Melbourne is one of Australia’s leading ensembles dedicated to the music of Asia Minor, rebetiko, and the broader Eastern Mediterranean tradition. Inspired by the historic “estudiantina” orchestras of Smyrna, the group brings together accomplished musicians who specialise in period style and instrumentation, including violin, oud, qanun, guitar, and accordion. Their performances are known for their authenticity, musical depth, and a strong connection to the cultural histories and stories embedded within this repertoire.
Joining them is Saltana, a Melbourne-based ensemble that explores the intersection of traditional Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern sounds with a contemporary sensibility. With a focus on expressive vocals and rich instrumental textures, Saltana reinterprets songs of love, exile, and resilience, offering audiences a fresh yet respectful take on this enduring musical tradition.
Together, these two ensembles present a dynamic programme drawing on the vibrant sounds of Smyrna, Constantinople, and beyond. Expect haunting melodies, intricate rhythms, and a powerful sense of storytelling that honours the legacy of Asia Minor while bringing it vividly into the present.
