West African blues meets Greek rebetiko.

From the streets of Bamako to the ports of Piraeus, music has long been a powerful voice for the marginalised. This performance unites the rich musical heritage of West African blues and the defiant spirit of Greek rebetiko, forging a compelling connection between two traditions deeply rooted in resilience, longing, and liberation.

At the heart of this collaboration are the Mande Blues Ensemble (MBE) and Estudiantina of Melbourne. Led by esteemed musicians Aboubacar Djéliké Kouyate (kamalengoni, guitar, percussion) and Amadou Suso (kora), experience the soulful rhythms of West African blues as MBE weaves the ancient kora’s intricate melodies into an evocative soundscape.

Breathing new life into Greek rebetiko music, often called the ‘outlaw blues’ of Greece, Estudiantina of Melbourne blends the lively tones of the bouzouki with influences from Greek, Turkish, Jewish, and Armenian musical traditions. With a masterful combination of instruments, their performances resonate with spellbinding innovation and timeless allure.

Together, these two ensembles create a poignant musical conversation, where shared themes of hardship and triumph unite across cultures. This performance celebrates the enduring power of music to transcend boundaries, a tribute to the strength and spirit that connects us all.

Songs from Smyrne Birds Basement

Continuing the Songs from Smyrne series, the Melbourne ensemble "Estudiantina of Melbourne" will perform a live concert spotlighting compositions post-population exchange. They'll emphasize pieces that rose to fame via gramophone recordings thereafter. The concert seeks to honor cultural diversity through music, spotlighting composers who resettled in mainland Greece and their profound impact on the musical milieu. Smyrne's musical landscape underwent significant shifts due to the Greece-Turkey population exchange in the 1920s, dispersing diverse musical traditions and fostering their preservation and evolution across various regions.

Today, echoes of Smyrneika music resonate in contemporary compositions, traditional ensembles, and the creations of modern artists inspired by the city's rich musical heritage. Smyrne, now Izmir in Turkey, occupies a pivotal role in the histories of Greek and Turkish musical traditions. It served as a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, influencing its music with a fusion of Greek, Turkish, Jewish, and Armenian elements. Smyrneika is characterized by its unique sound, blending instruments like the oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, and guitar, among others. Its melodies often evoke emotion and melancholy, reflecting the experiences and sentiments of Smyrne's diverse populace.

This event is co-presented with Con Kalamaras, The Hellenic Museum Melbourne, and The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne.

The Boite presents Estudiantina of Melbourne at Mark St Hall

Estudiantina of Melbourne is more than just a musical ensemble; it's a passionate torchbearer of traditional Greek music, particularly Smyrneika, deeply entrenched in the cultural fabric of Greece.

With a profound appreciation for the diverse influences that shape Smyrneika, ranging from Greek and Turkish to Jewish and Armenian, the ensemble creates a mesmerizing fusion that breathes new life into this age-old genre. Their music, adorned with instruments like the oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, and guitar, resonates with an authenticity that captivates audiences.

Beyond Smyrneika, the ensemble also delves into the realm of Rebetiko, another poignant expression of Greek folk music. Originating from the struggles and triumphs of Greece's urban working class, Rebetiko's soul-stirring melodies and evocative lyrics serve as a poignant reminder of the human experience, touching upon themes of adversity, displacement, and resilience. Through the harmonious interplay of instruments such as the bouzouki, baglama, and accordion, Estudiantina of Melbourne crafts a soundscape that pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Greece.
